Dark Forest by postapocalypsia Dark Forest by postapocalypsia
This is another moody forest piece. I am messing with light and dark and the complexity of nature, but in a naive intuitive kind of way...something like that!

Hey...a naive intuitive way can lead to a lot of beautiful work! And it helps us to push the envelope and stretch some.
I like this a lot. It would make a great mural for a meditation hall. It looks very serene. And if you listen real hard, you can hear that water trickling through the scene.
It's a very beautiful piece of work!

I like the beams of light. Up here in the dense old growth, you can see the trees "respirating" (releasing vapour) at certain times of day. It makes the forest seem both creepy and magical.

That would be good to see! I have plenty of inspiration to do more forest painting.
You are right - it is a mix of magic and unknown :)

I really love how cool and calming your paintings are.
You always have an element of shadow in your paintings, but it stands out really well in this one.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm pleased they give a calming effect. I certainly like the interplay between light and shadow - there's a wealth of artistic inspiration in the shape and quality of shadow.
Glad you like it :)

Well it's certainly very successful messing around. You've done a great job creating the kind of mysterious, inviting, moody gloominess that makes me like forests so much. :meow:

What is it about the composition that you're agonising over?

I'm not sure exactly - there's no real focus I guess. When I start out on a picture I try to form a strong arrangement of shapes that will catch the eye and lead you around the composition. This one seems more focused on mood and memory of a place. That's ok with me - I suppose I am trying something new.
Thanks for your interest! :)

I do see what you mean about the lack of a strong focal point, but I think in a way that adds to the image, since it really does make it all about the mood and atmosphere.
