Yes, you do need thinning agents. I've used turpentine, but you could just use linseed oil turpentine makes it dry faster though.
Cleaning of brushes is mostly done with oil (you can reuse it and it doesn't smell or evaporate) but the smart thing to do it to have different brushes for different colors, that way you can have them submerged in oil and don't have to clean them so often.
But I'd like to hear the expert answer this too
