Jeb takes a ride... by postapocalypsia Jeb takes a ride... by postapocalypsia
This is from 2 ideas of mine that I am slowly turning into a story. I had sculpted the "handisaurus" a few years ago and then saw an opportunity to slot it into a narrative. This painting is a concept to help me crystalize my thinking... Acrylic on board 500mm x 800mm

I love this. You should definitely use it in a story. Cool idea, and really nicely painted.

I find a bit of a story helps with creating a picture for which there is no reference but it can be dangerous, two of my character stories escaped and became a book that is still writing me. Now I have two books full of interesting art possibilities. A character illistration does help quite a bit in writing a story.
Interesting characters, when do we see the story?

I'm afraid the story has been somewhat buried under an avalanche of day to day life. One day I will wake up and it will be the priority of the day...

Boy, do I know that one. Writing a story is fun, even as the author you don't know exactly what is going to happen, the story often seems to take on a life of its own.
Your characters are interesting at least.

Thanks - I will just keep inventing things when I get an idle moment and then one day it will all make sense!

this is beautiful. the handasaurus reminds me of the game called oddworld(its a great game). the enemies in that game have hands for heads but thats all...
its a great character, you should be proud of creating it ;)
i also have a character in my mind which i think is going to be great. im not telling you though. X)
i just have to put him down on paper.

Yep, don't give any ideas away until you get them down on paper first - then you know it's yours!

The integration of the landscape, the clouds, and the background is excellent. Good work.

One question: How does "handisaurus" see?

The person who said this was "un-natural" looking was right, but the greatness of it is that it isn't also: it reminds me a lot of the realism of James Gurney's dinosaur paintings, but you have to do a double take to see the wierdness. That's my favorite type of art.

Some questions are better off unanswered - needless to say there are all sorts of weird beasties that get around in total darkness in the real world - they just work it out and we just accept the weirdness of it all

the woman looks so natural sitting on the ''handisaurus". It's well drawn. You've given this crazy un-natural fantasy animal a touch of realism with the way you've drawn this. Makes you feel it could exist heheh.

Insanely, spectacular work :wow:
and it is so refreshing to see some artists still using acrylic =D
P.S. as I said before on your sculpteur, the creature design is fantastic:aww:
the feet are so well painted, the light and shadows accenting the deep tendons and protrusive scales give them an incredibly realistic look ^_^
I love the rains and positioning of the thumb, placing it centered on the head gives it simmetry and makes the animal look more natural, very nice work

Thanks! I figured he would need his thumb/jaw centered - it means I can utilize that fleshy bit between the thumb and forefinger as a cheek on both sides.
I did another guy with two thumbs per hand - maybe I could post him...

theres something compelling about the handisaurus character, and not just because i have a thing for theropods.

I like the painterly feel of this, i actually had to scroll up to see if this was traditional or not though, its hard to tell nowadays.

He is pretty much all human parts (except the tail) - and yes, I am of the realm of the furry stick and pigment - although I do dabble a little in diggitals occasionally =D

this is amazing, i cant help but see humour in it though, so i apologize in advanced for saying this, but it reminds me of a hand puppet, you know the one you use to do shadows on the walls.
so great

Don't apologize...that's exactly where I started from=D - I was trying to articulate a creature's head in my mind, and held up my hand a la sock puppet, and bingo! It struck me that there was a lot of untapped philosophy and fun to be had with the hand-as-more-than-the-hand. Glad you saw the humour in there:)
