The Last Hill by postapocalypsia The Last Hill by postapocalypsia
Oil on canvas 325mm x 540mm
This has a philosophical bent but I will leave it for folks to interpret as they see fit.

I hope folks find their own interpretations of course, but I appreciate your observation. I thought long and hard about the composition and palette - glad you like it :)

Well, I note that everything at the top of the hill, and likely behind it as well, is brighter, with cheerier colors. I see this climb as a transition. Is he climbing towards that woman in the distance? I feel like this is the end of his trials of a particular nature. I think that this won't literally be his last hill to climb, but the last challenge before some form of rebirth.

Basically, he is emerging from shadow into light, which could be akin to many different interpretations. He still has to climb the hill of course! But we can see that he is a seasoned traveller and has much to look forward to. The girl waiting for him promises comfort for sure. The details are up to the viewer to embellish.
Thank you kindly for your thoughtful and insightful comments - you pretty much saw it how I hoped! :)

What a light!
Your composition is very interesting. There is some hope in the warmth of the trees (and the character on the top).

You are a great painter!

Carrying a burden of bitter anguish and disappointment, treading a rough, mostly unrewarding path, anticipating the long awaited embrace of that maiden who waits for you at the end of all journeys. " There, my dear, lie in my arms, o weary one, for here I am, your eternal lover."

Sorry, I know I've made it sound quite dark and hopeless. But it's just what came to my mind. Death is not the end.

Once a jolly swagman .. you'll come a waltsing Matilda with me ...

... Well, I love climbing hills and I just hear him singing a song as he comes home ...soon he'll be welcomed...

Philosophy , I can see it ... still I hear his tired yet cheerful voice singing as he nears his place in the sun... A beautiful, evocative image.

Well David, I can certainly draw my own personal interpretation from this very easily. I don't think it's all too easy to create an image from which people are able to do that so easily, kudos! :meow:

Beautiful - lovely color, brushstrokes and deft handling of the paint. Reminds me of some of my favorite N.C. Wyeth paintings... (Go Howard Pyle Students!) :D

...And life is a mountain we have to climb... Hills here and there, new obstacles or new challenges, for everyone different. Mostly covered in shadows. Some would choose to find a quiet den and dwell there to the end, but there are ones who choose to walk, to search and to reveal the paths before them, to climb the peaks. And after many hills he has walked upon and left behind his back, He finally dreams about the Last One, where there is Comfort, Peace and Harmony...Where there is Sun.
